When a Volunteer Listing Does Not Explain Accessibility

When a volunteer listing does not explain accessibility, the relevant arrangements remain unconfirmed—not necessarily unavailable. A listing may omit communication options, recruitment-resource formats, or a process for discussing needs and barriers without showing what can be arranged for a particular role. NCVO recommends offering multiple communication methods and recruitment-resource formats, and advises organisations to ask volunteers regularly about their needs and potential barriers.

What can be checked in the listing?

A reader can check whether the listing identifies:

  • Communication methods: More than one way to receive information or respond.
  • Recruitment-resource formats: Different formats for materials connected with the volunteer opportunity.
  • Needs and barriers: A clear way to raise an access need or discuss what could prevent participation.
  • Unanswered points: Any vague part of the process, such as how support will be discussed or what can be arranged.

Missing information should be recorded as missing. It should not become an assumption that accessibility support exists, or a conclusion that support is unavailable.

How to check without assuming an answer

General inclusion guidance cannot confirm what a particular listing or organisation will provide. The reader therefore needs role-specific clarification on:

  1. Which communication methods are available for the listing.
  2. Which recruitment resources can be provided and in which formats.
  3. How a volunteer can raise needs or potential barriers.
  4. What the organisation can discuss or arrange for the particular role.
  5. Which points remain unresolved if the listing provides no clear answer.

NCVO’s recommendations support asking these questions, but they do not answer them for an individual organisation or role.

What still requires direct confirmation

Any arrangement must be confirmed with the relevant organisation rather than inferred from a general guide. Until the communication method, resource format, and process for discussing needs and barriers are clear, the listing has not established how participation will work for a person with access needs.
